Let there be light… or fire for that matter. Markus Keibel is setting books on fire – transforming written words into pieces of art. MIND ON FIRE is his upcoming exhibition at ARTARY Gallery, Stuttgart. And for those of you who are cringing at the thought of burnt books – let it be said that these aren’t any kind of books. As an artistic statement he sets fire to the books that have been censored by the Catholic Church until 1965 under the Index librum prohiborum, specifically to those about the Enlightenment and utopian narrations.
In his work process Keibel first absorbs the book’s content, then in a second step – analogue to digitalization – he dissolves them into small particles (also called ashes), to reassemble them into a new form = art.
For those of you who can’t make it to Stuttgart check out Keibel’s work on his website.
